FROZEN LANDSCAPES EXHIBITION - ABBEY MUSEUM

Often perceived as an immobile space, silent and frozen as it awaits the thaw, the frozen landscape has been the subject of numerous projections and reveries by artists over the centuries. The mountain and the glacier have been the most frequent motifs and incarnations, giving form to representations that are sometimes idealised or fantasised.

Frost and snowy white can be associated with silence and opacity, but also with mystery, sometimes reassuring, sometimes imposing, sometimes frightening. Frozen matter can be transformed into a moving monster, an avalanche, but also protect from view an unsuspected subaquatic life...

Today, rapid and inexorable global warming is jeopardising seasonal balances and ecosystems, and can also shake the sometimes ready-made images associated with them...

The Frozen Landscapes exhibition invites us to explore these stories and movements in white and frost, even when melted.

Exhibition curators: Amélie Lavin, Valérie Pugin and Corsin Vogel

Musée de l'Abbaye opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 2pm to 6pm.
