Conférence “Alpinisme : 50e anniversaire de la première ascension du Mont Ross (archipel de Kerguelen)”

PREMANON | LE 17 Jan

Chèques vacances acceptés

In January 1975, one of France's most inaccessible peaks, Mount Ross, a totally atypical mountain, was climbed for the first time by a national expedition (TAAF-FFM) organised and led by Jean Rivolier**, including mountaineers Jean Afanassieff, Patrick Cordier, Denis Ducroz, Georges Polian, Patrice Bodin and doctor Jacques Regnard.
The highest point in the Kerguelen archipelago and the French Southern and Antarctic Territories (TAAF), located south of the Roaring Forties and close to the Roaring Fifties, this 1,850-metre-high mountain is the remaining western wall of a volcano that exploded some twenty thousand years ago. Frequent avalanches from hanging glaciers sweep down the 1100m-high, sub-vertical eastern wall. The vast crater to the east is occupied by a large glacier that flows 11km to the ocean.
Swept by snow and often extremely violent westerly winds, this exceptional summit is subject to typically sub-Antarctic weather conditions. It is one of the most difficult summits in the world to access.
To date, only three expeditions have achieved this feat ***.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the first ascent, come and listen to the story of this extraordinary adventure, and watch films and a slide show.

**Jean Rivolier (1923-2007) was the doctor on the Makalu expedition in 1953, then chief physician for the Polar Expeditions (EPF), the TAAF and the FFM (French Mountaineering Federation).

***In 1974-75, J. Rivolier's expedition, then in 2002 the Chamonix EMHM expedition led by Captain Bollo, and finally in 2006 Lionel Daudet's expedition.

This evening event will be commented on by Georges Polian, a member of the 1975 expedition and a scientist who wintered in Kerguelen in 1961 and in Terre Adélie in 1964, and who has carried out numerous missions in the TAAF, the polar regions and on volcanoes (Erebus, etc.) to measure radioactive emissions from magma gases.
Organised in partnership with the Amicale des Missions Australes Et Polaires Françaises (AMAEPF).
