L'ORIENT DES ARTISTES VOYAGEUSES EXHIBITION 1894-1944 / MUSÉE DE L'ABBAYE
From Friday 28 June to Sunday 5 January at the Musée de l'Abbaye in Saint-Claude.
This exhibition brings together 17 women artists who travelled from North Africa to the Indochinese Peninsula, from India to Tibet. The turn of the 20th century was marked by a renewed interest in Orientalism, stimulated by winter tourism, particularly in Algeria, and encouraged by the exhibitions of the Society of French Orientalist Painters founded in 1897.
As colonisation expanded under the Third Republic, the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français (Colonial Society of French Artists), founded in 1908, set up a number of travel grants, from which the artists in this exhibition benefited, in order to renew their artistic practice through contact with the people and landscapes of the French Colonial Empire. With nearly 85 paintings and graphic works, representing a wide range of artistic approaches, the exhibition sheds light on the careers of these women artists.
